Regulation research is when you research the company bbfc which stands for the British board of film classification who is an independent company which means its non governmental body. The bbfc is funded by the fees it charges to those who submit films and video works for classification. What the bbfc do is when a film is being developed before the film comes out in the cinema the company bbfc have to give it a age classification and restriction so parents know what films are suitable for there children and also to reduce crime which is why it has now become a law which all films must have done else they will sued or something even worse will happen. There are six different categories which films are categorised by these are U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, and 18. All of the different categories have different meanings and ratings.
U stands for universal which means any film which has been categorised and rated as a U means that the film is suitable for all so it doesn’t matter how young someone is they can watch. Films that have be categorised and rated U should include moral framework which is not linked or in any participation to do with discrimination, drugs, horror, imitable behaviour, bad and offensive language, nudity, sex, themes and violence.
PG stands for parental guidance which means any children can watch this film and not have to be in company of an adult but parents are warned that they advise it for only children which are over eight because the films may contain some things which they may not want there children to know or see because they might find it upsetting this means that these may include discrimination, drugs, horror, imitable behaviour, bad and offensive language, nudity, sex, themes and violence which is the areas that a U film doesnt include.
12A stands for children 12 and over are allowed to see the film but with an adult which means that any child who is 12 or over may see the film but it is necessary that the child has a adult with them this is because there is something in the film which might not be suitable for there child so thats why they recommend and adult to be with them. Only cinemas holds this category and rating because its up to the parents at home and there judgment if they dont mind there child seeing the film but at the cinema every film needs a rating from the bbfc like I have said before so the cinema can be sued if there child saw a film which there parent wasn’t happy with.
.
12 stands for children 12 and over are allowed to see this film and they dont have to be in company of an adult which means that the film is acceptable that a 12 year old and over can see this film by themselves or with there friends so in a group. Since the film has been classified and rated as a 12 and not a 12A means that the film wont contain anything that could have a bad influence on them.
15 stands for teenagers who are 15 and over are allowed to see this film which means anyone younger than 15 if they dont have any sort of ID on them when they get to the cinema like there passport it means that they wont be able to see the film because you have to be 15 and they have to have proof of them being 15. This also means that 15 year olds or over will need there ID to buy a DVD or rent a DVD from a shop because otherwise the shops can be sued because they will be breaking the law by not asking them for nay type of ID.
18 stands for teenagers that have just become an adult in the eyes of the law which means that films that are categorised and rated as an 18 can have any kind of content in them because of the age of 18 being an adult. This also means the same as a 15 because its a high categorised and rated film you need ID to be able to prove that your that age and then to be able to get in to watch the film. If you dont have ID you wont be allowed to buy a ticket and watch a film this is because that the film might contain things that are not suitable for the younger years.
I think after researching what has to be involved in the film and not be involved in the film to be able to categorise and rate the films I have decided that our film should be categorised and rated as a 15 this is because of there being some bad language and violence through the film which wont be appropriate for anybody under 15 to see.
What I have learnt by doing regulation research is that there are all kinds of laws that have to be followed to be able to have films shown in the cinema to promote there films individually. I have also found out what our rating is by following the bbfc guidelines of finding out how they categorise and rate there films this shows that I understand how to be able to categorise and rate films and why these percussions are necessary.
